Automotive programs offer the technical skills needed to help build and repair complex cars that now include high-tech computer systems. Many of the courses teach how to use diagnostic software in order to figure out what is going wrong in a customer's car.

In addition to the new need for computer savviness, automotive technicians still need to be handy with tools, including welders in some cases. They also often apply for certification by the ASE, a national standards committee. Work opportunities are available in local repair shops and chains, as well as dealership service departments and custom car builders.
